Letting Go of Pain

Conversations with What Lives Within is a series of authentic inner dialogues that emerged through my personal exploration and facilitation work.

Held in conscious presence and guided by the Superconscious, these conversations explore what can happen when we begin relating differently to the energies, patterns, and parts of ourselves that live within us.

For a long time, I thought the uncomfortable energies I experienced inside me were something I needed to fight, eliminate, silence, or overcome.

Through my own inner work, including the MAP Method, I began discovering something different.

Sometimes, what is needed isn’t more effort.

Sometimes, it is a different relationship with what is already present.

I began to recognize that some of the energies within me were not responding to the present moment. They were still organized around old experiences — carrying conclusions, protections, and ways of relating that had once made sense.

They were not necessarily reflections of who I was now.

This helped me understand something that changed the way I related to my inner world:

I could think, feel, or react in ways that seemed much smaller than the greater expression of who I sensed myself to be — without concluding that something was wrong with me.

Some of what I was experiencing belonged to patterns that were still responding to realities that no longer existed.

And those energies did not necessarily need to be fought or eliminated.

They could be acknowledged.

They could be heard.

And when they were ready, the Superconscious could contribute to reorganizing the dynamics around them.

As I continued exploring, I discovered that some of these energies seemed to have their own point of view about what was happening.

Rather than trying to convince or change them, I became curious.

I began having conversations with them.

Throughout these conversations, I also remain in communication with the Superconscious. Sometimes it offers a question I had not considered. At other times, it guides the process in a direction my mind would not have chosen or anticipated.

The conversation is not something I consciously script.

I listen to what is present, respond to what emerges, and follow the guidance I receive.

Sometimes, what is ready to be released is not the energy itself, but the reality it still believes it is living in.

The conversation below is one example.

Edith: To the energies I’m perceiving right now… are you willing to let go of the pain?

Pain-Based Identity: I’m not sure… Who are we going to be without the pain?

Edith: Aren’t you curious to find out?

Perhaps you would simply have more space to be who you are.

Pain-Based Identity: This pain was mine. It’s the only thing I have left.

Edith: At one time, this pain was precious to you.

But none of us are in that place anymore. We are somewhere different now.

Would you like to join us here?

Let’s speak with the pain you’ve been protecting and see what it wants.

Pain… are you willing to talk with us?

First of all, welcome.

Is there anything you need?

We see you now.

Pain: I was ashamed to be seen.

I didn’t feel very welcome in Edith’s world.

Edith: I’m sorry.

I wasn’t ready — or perhaps I hadn’t taken the time — to welcome you before.

You are welcome now.

Pain: I’m not sure I want that.

Edith: What would you like?

Pain: I’m not sure.

I don’t know what I want.

Edith: Well, you’re with us now, and I include you.

Would you like me to choose on your behalf?

Pain: I don’t know.

Edith: Then I’ll choose for you.

Superconscious, do I continue the conversation with the pain?

Superconscious: No.

Edith: Superconscious, do I continue the conversation with the Pain-Based Identity?

Superconscious: No.

Edith: Superconscious, do I return to the MAP protocol?

Superconscious: Yes.

I returned to the MAP protocol.

After several instructions were given to the Superconscious, the energetic dynamics involved in the conversation were facilitated through the MAP process.

What I noticed afterward was that the charge, point of view, and inner conflict I had been experiencing in relation to these energies were no longer present in the same way.

The energies that had been preventing the session from moving forward no longer seemed organized around the same reality.

Something had shifted.

Rather than needing those energies to disappear, my relationship with them — and the way they were organized within my experience — had changed.
